Origin of the needle ledges
Let's start with the origin of needle rushes, because they are not only found in our domestic aquariums, but can also be found in nature. Basically, the Nadelsimse or there mostly known under the name Swamp Nadelsimse, is quite widespread. Above all, however, it occurs in Eurasia. Here in Central Europe you will rarely see them, although in summer you can also discover them on a swampy meadow here. As the name suggests, it needs quite wet areas and swamps. Needle ledges can also be found on the flat shores of lakes. In Germany, this plant is on the red list, which means that the plant is endangered.
Name and appearance of the needle ledges
Let's take a closer look at the needle ledges. Of course you can see it much better in the pictures. The needle ledge has its name, which is known to contain needles, not for nothing, because its leaves and shoots are quite pointed and look like needles. Hence the German name. The Latin name acicularis also translates as needlepoint. One could also describe their appearance as grassy. The hair-thin stalks form a very dense lawn, provided they are planted accordingly. At least the needle ledge bears a resemblance to it. Their particularly rich green color gives many aquariums an optimal appearance, especially in the front area. But you have to differentiate between the dwarf needle ledges and the normal needle ledges. It remains much smaller and is extremely popular with nano aquariums in particular. Especially since it basically just covers the ground. The growth of the rooting plant is not particularly fast.
Requirements and care of needle ledges
Let's now come to the requirements of the needle rushes, because we wouldn't call them a beginner's plant, even though many people talk about it. Above all, it needs very good light and the ground area should not be too much covered with shadows. When it comes to water values, acidic water with a PH value of 5 - 7 should be preferred. Above that it is usually difficult to hold the needle ledges. There are no special requirements in terms of hardness and the Nadelsimse should be able to cope well in both hard and soft water.
The Simse has an advantage in terms of temperature, because it thrives at a temperature of around 5 degrees and can be used up to around 26 - 27 degrees. In a warmer tank, such as discus love, the needle rush will not grow.
If you leave its shoots a little longer, then it can even be planted in the middle of the aquarium. Otherwise you can cut back these shoots at any time. When planting, you should make sure that you put the needle ledges quite close together, as they spread rather little in width.
