Aquarium diffuser and air vent

Advice and knowledge about the diffuser im Aquarium: Today's guide is about diffusers in aquaristics. These usually find Aquarium filter, but also on vents from diaphragm pumps and Inflation your place. You can find out what diffusers are and whether you should use them here. In addition, we also give tips on the purchase decision and recommendations as to which diffusers are really worthwhile.

What is a diffuser anyway?

Let's first come to the actual function of a diffuser. Basically, you have to differentiate between the vents, which are associated with an air pump or a compressor / membrane pump, and diffusers, which are located directly on the filter (usually on the internal filters). Basically, however, it is always about bringing additional air into the aquarium. Above all, this should have the additional effect Oxygen into the water and then of course to solve it accordingly. Diffusers are available in different designs, but the functional principle for those operated on the filter is always the same. Here, oxygen is sucked in through an additional hose above the water surface and then released back into the water outlet. So you take air through the negative pressure of the filter outlet and release this air in the aquarium, i.e. under the water surface. This is where many fine bubbles form. A diffuser basically ensures that water is additionally mixed with air.

How does oxygen normally get into the aquarium?

Let's assume they don't use a diffuser, which is what most aquarists do. Even then, oxygen will accumulate in the water. This oxygen comes from the movement of the water surface and is sufficient for most people well established aquariums also from. Additional oxygen is usually not necessary, as this can also have disadvantages. Nevertheless, there are a few reasons why you may need additional oxygen in the aquarium. These are quite diverse and we have already described them in detail in the article on air pumps. Here again in brief:

  • Increasing the water temperature decreases the percentage of oxygen
  • treatments of diseases
  • Special ornamental fish requirements
  • Problems with filtration Expelling CO2

The connection to CO2 is also repeatedly described. A lot of oxygen usually means less CO2. This is our fertilizer for the plants. So if you have a large or too large water movement, then Co2 is also expelled. You should definitely take this into account. It doesn't always make sense to use a diffuser.

What is an outflow?

An air vent is basically there for the air that comes from a diaphragm pump or air pump to be distributed accordingly. The diffuser turns the large air bubbles into fine air bubbles, which in turn has the advantage that the water is enriched with more oxygen. The vents are available in different designs and sizes. Be it as stones or as plastic parts, which can be attached to the pane with a suction cup. This can usually be adjusted in terms of the outflow rate. Wooden air vents in different sizes are also available for purchase. The larger the vents are, the more power is basically required of the air pump.

The vents can even be packed in particularly beautiful decorative objects (shells, divers).

Disadvantages and advantages of diffusers and vents

Finally, a brief note regarding the disadvantages of such devices. These devices are used again and again, although it is not necessary. You simply bring additional oxygen into the aquarium, although you don't need it at all.

The disadvantages are overlooked or you simply do not know them. Due to the "too much" oxygen, there is an expulsion of CO2 and thus of valuable plant fertilizer. This should definitely be observed. Especially if you're still with one CO2 fertilization works.

Of course, it can also be advantageous if you really need more oxygen.

Our tip: Check carefully whether more oxygen is necessary or not. Best with a test. This is also available in specialist shops and online shops.
