Prepare mangrove roots - watering, boiling and cleaning

Now we come to the pre-treatment of roots. Of course, this applies not only to the mangrove roots, but also to other types of roots. One thing you should definitely make sure of. Before a root comes into the tank, it should be prepared accordingly. Also these where you buy in specialist shops and which are especially for the aquarium. Normally, these are not packaged and can therefore contain a lot of substances that have no place in the aquarium and would therefore affect the water values.

First you should get all the new roots brush and wash thoroughly. Depending on how dirty they are, one can wire brush from the hardware store do a good job here.

After the superficial cleaning, however, there can still be various pollutants in the root. Therefore, many aquarists also advise the roots to boil / boil out. We cannot always confirm this. But it certainly doesn't do any harm.

But what you should definitely do is water a new root. Here the root is placed in water, preferably for several days. This water usually changes color accordingly. If you didn't do this, it could happen in the aquarium that the tank would become completely cloudy for a long time. After putting the roots in water, you should brush them off again. You could do that in between.

After the watering, the root has also pulled out with water, so that it should not have any buoyancy in the aquarium. If this is not the case, then you have to weigh them down a bit in the first few days. Here again the most important steps for watering a mangrove root:

  • Thoroughly brush and rinse the root first
  • Put the root in a large bowl of water
  • Water for several days
  • Water can also be changed from time to time to determine whether it is still colouring
  • Then wash and brush the roots again
  • in the case of coarse soiling, boil it out first

If you follow these steps, you should be able to get a handle on a possible cloudiness quite quickly.
