Therefore, it is time to take a closer look at this question. This is less about the stocking as you would expect from the area of the ornamental fish knows, because there is already an article from us, which the Stocking density explained in detail. Today it's about how many shrimp I can put in a normal nano aquarium with 10, 20 or 30 liters.
Size matters
When we say size matters, we don't mean the size of the aquarium, of course, but rather the size of the shrimp, because here a distinction is made between king shrimp and dwarf shrimp. Basically, shrimp are divided into three groups:
- dwarf shrimp
- arm shrimp
- fan shrimp
The last two genera in particular are significantly larger here and are certainly an exception among shrimp breeders and owners. Red Cherry or Blue Dream shrimp, for example, are among the dwarf shrimp and we would like to limit our stocking size tips to these. Red Rili, Red Sakura, bumblebee shrimp and Blue Jerry are certainly some of the best-known representatives of the dwarf shrimp.
Minimum stock
Before we talk about the stock size, as mentioned at the beginning, we would like to point out the minimum stock size, because shrimp have to be kept in groups. Here it is certainly not enough to keep only three animals. Here you should always assume a minimum stock of 10 animals. These already fit into a tank with 10 liters.

Shrimp can breed quickly
If you start stocking shrimp in the nano aquarium for the first time, you can expect them to multiply quickly. This should also be taken into account when making appointments. 10 shrimp quickly turn into 20 - 40 animals and therefore you always have to keep certain reserves.
Water values and keeping conditions must fit
It is also very important that the keeping conditions and the water values are right. This is the only way to trust a larger stock. The more shrimp you keep in your tank, the greater the need for care. In addition, the starting position must also be right. The nano aquarium must be well run in and then you can start with the step-by-step stocking.
How many shrimp in a 10 liter nano aquarium?
In a small 10 liter aquarium, where you can't really care for anything in terms of fish, there are already the first shrimp, which could find their place here. But we would not use more than 10 animals here. In various forums, with such a size, there is a wild discussion as to whether animals should be used at all. Betas (fighting fish) usually find their place in such sizes, but some shrimp can also feel comfortable in 10 liters. Certainly not 50 pieces. We would not use more than 10 animals. Should this multiply, there would still be some air. Many shrimp breeders are also of the opinion that up to 30 animals can easily move in here.
So if you really only want to buy the 10 or 12 liter version, you can do so, but we would recommend one size larger.
How many shrimp in a 20 liter nano aquarium?
With a 20 liter nano aquarium you have a lot more leeway when it comes to stocking shrimp. Most opinions here say that 20 - 50 shrimp are not a problem if the water parameters are good and there is sufficient hygiene. But we wouldn't use much more than 50 here either.
How many shrimp in a 30 liter nano aquarium?
With 30 liters you could not really use anything in the field of ornamental fish. Then there are small nano fish species, which we do not want to list here. With shrimp, however, 40 - 100 animals are not a problem. In exceptional cases you can see even more animals. Especially the breeders. However, we do not recommend going beyond these guidelines.
Of course, the values presented above are only guidelines and there is still some leeway. The whole thing also depends on the water conditions and the type and genus of the breed.
