CO2 system for several aquariums

CO2 system for several aquariums build, buy and put together: is that even possible? Today we want to address a question that is asked again and again when it comes to building a CO2 system. Many aquarists don't just own one tank and want all of them CO2 fertilization take care of. We have already explained in detail in our that this makes sense and has advantages Guide to fertilizing aquatic plants with Co2 described. So that you don't need a separate system for each aquarium, there should be a way to build a system here to supply two or more aquariums with CO2 at the same time.

So, above all, you could Costs save. Especially if you want to supply many smaller aquariums or nano aquariums with Co2. But how can you do that? Which functions should also be considered and, above all, how can I regulate each aquarium separately? We will get to the bottom of these questions below. You can also find brief instructions on how to do this.

Regulation and adjustment for several aquariums

Every aquarium, no matter how the same, requires a different supply of Co2. This must either be calculated or you can measure the CO2 supply with a long-term test.

This is exactly the problem if you want to use a Co2 system with several aquariums. Basically, you could make it quite easy by taking a multiple distributor and thus allowing the Co2 to flow from the compressed gas tank into each aquarium. This is known, for example, when operating one diaphragm pump and several Hamburg mat filter.

However, it would not be possible to set an individual number of bubbles and the CO2 would simply flow into each pool. You could only do the regulation directly on the pressure reducer. As you know, there is a nail valve there. Also see our article on Adjustment of a Co2 system.

So another solution has to be found so that I can regulate each pool independently.

There are different approaches to this.

CO2 system for several pools with individual needle valves for fine adjustment

If you take the outlet of the pressure reducer and connect it to a multiple distributor, then you basically have exactly what you need. However, this multiple distributor must also have a separate control for each outlet. This is the only way to dose the gas accordingly and adjust it separately for each aquarium.

The manufacturers offer various options for this. Be it the use of a Y distributor for two aquariums. We have linked them below. This has the option of setting two outlets individually. The price is around 35 euros.

If that's not enough for you, you can also find triple distributors. Aqua Noa, for example, has this in its program and you can now use your CO45 system in three pools for around 2 euros and adjust them individually. This saves a lot of costs.

CO2 distributor professional with 3 fine needle valves, aquarium air flow control valve with 3 outlets (triple distributor)
  • Space-saving: 3 precision needle valves for separate fine adjustment of the CO2 or air supply of 3 aquariums from one CO2 bottle.
  • Precise regulation: Each line has its own CO2 fine-needle valve, so that an exact dosage of the CO2 can be guaranteed and each diffuser is supplied with the right amount of CO2.
  • High quality material: The solid construction ensures a long service life and reliability even when dealing with water.
  • Flexible: The distributor has three connections for 4/6 pressure hoses and a connection to the CO2 system with a 4/6 pressure hose.
  • Easy assembly: The hoses are fastened quickly, cleanly and securely using union nuts and can thus withstand the increased pressure of Co2 systems.

The manufacturer Yunt even has a model with which you can control 6 pools individually. The arrangement is different here, but the function seems to fulfill the purpose here as well.

CO2 system for several pools with pressure reducer and several outlets

Of course, there are other ways to supply many pools with CO2. There are also pressure reducers which already have several outlets. We have also found some products for this. Be it the three compartment pressure reducer professional from Aqua Noa which is suitable for the 2 kg bottle and has three adjustable outlets. You can buy these devices for around 100 euros. Of course, the hose and the other components are then required. Aqua Noa also has all the individual components in its portfolio so that you can put together your own Co2 system.

In addition, this pressure reducer is only available with two outlets. JBL also offers some products here. For example, there is the JBL ProFlora m001 duo which also has two exits. But here you have to pay a little more at around 120 euros.

CO2 system for several pools not arbitrarily expandable

However, if you think you could expand a CO2 system as you wish, you have to say that there are also limits here. Which limit this is depends on the CO2 requirement of the respective aquarium. Pressure also plays a role here. Longer distances from the compressed gas tank to the pool cause pressure losses, which must be taken into account. This must be included in the calculation.

Also, the pressure of a 500 gram bottle will not be sufficient for an infinite number of aquariums. Here you should then resort to bigger wrong ones.
