Power failure in an aquarium, what should I watch out for?

The Aquarium without electricity - Power failure the Aquarium: The horror of every aquarist is the sudden power failure in an aquarium. Especially when it takes a long time for the power to come back. This can quickly become a danger to the fish. But what can you do about it and what should you watch out for? Can you protect yourself against this? How long can fish survive in the aquarium without electricity? We will get to the bottom of these questions below.

Power failure aquarium

Power failure causes and reasons

If you have a power failure, the first thing to do is keep calm. In our Power grid in Germany, but also in the Switzerland and Austria the electricity is usually back within a very short time. Lots of redundancies ensure this. Nevertheless, there are failures, which can sometimes last longer. Especially when there are local defects. For example, broken ones power lines by excavation work, or accidents on junction boxes. Water ingress is also always a problem, so the power goes out.

The reasons can also be weather-related. It can storms come where electricity pylons break down due to storms or lightning damage the switchover stations. It can go so far that you have a lightning strike in your own house and the main fuses in the house connection box are defective. This is the transfer point from the utility grid to his house. The causes are quite varied. Depending on how these are, the longer it can be until the electricity is back.

At this point we also advise against the devices on the aquarium Overload to protect. There are various adapters for this, because with one lightning strike it could also happen that devices become defective due to the overvoltage.

An aquarium needs electricity

Anyone who operates one or more aquariums also has a lot of electrical equipment that is required. It is not possible to do without these. If only for a short time, but no longer. The filtering in particular requires electricity, but so does the heating. In our opinion, these are the most important devices that are absolutely necessary. Of course, the lighting is also needed. But if it fails for a few hours, it's not that bad. This is different when it comes to heating.

Although most can ornamental fish also a few temperature fluctuations tolerated, but these should not be too big on the one hand and not too long on the other. Above all, ornamental fish such as the Dikus require high temperatures and therefore a temperature drop of several degrees is possible very quickly. Normally it's up to 30 degrees here. If the power goes out and the pool is in a room with 18 degrees, the temperature will drop very quickly. The whole thing becomes even more extreme if you have your pool in a basement room and it is even colder there. Then a power failure quickly becomes a problem.

The way food is filtering needed Electricity. Will not water for some time circulated, because the fish lack the Oxygen. Electricity is also urgently needed here. CO2 systems and controls are usually not essential to life and can also do without electricity for some time.

Power failure

Up to 2 hours power failure usually no problem

If the electricity is gone for less than hours, it is usually not a problem for the animals to survive this without major problems. The Lighting certainly not if then temperature could be a problem. But usually everything goes really smoothly here.

From a power failure of 2 hours it becomes critical

If the electricity is gone for more than two hours, things could become critical. In most cases, you should then observe the ornamental fish closely and possibly initiate the first measures. What can you do then, you might ask?

Increase temperature even without electricity

If you don't have electricity, the heating usually doesn't work anymore and you don't have the possibility to heat indirectly. However, if the heating should still work, then you could indirectly keep the temperature of the aquarium constant. Anyone who fires with wood has an advantage. You could also ask your neighbors if you could use a cable to get electricity for your aquarium from them. As long as it still has power. Another possibility is to supply the water of the aquarium with hot water from a charged Beuler / storage tank / hot water storage tank and thus drive the temperature up again.

Of course, a power generator would also be an option, which you can use if you have one. You will have a hard time with batteries and rechargeable batteries without a UPS system. Nevertheless, this possibility also exists. Let's summarize:

  • Get electricity from the neighbors
  • Mix water with hot water from the reservoir
  • use generators
  • Heat the aquarium indirectly with the heating of the room
  • Wood heating as an alternative
  • use UPS

Oxygen enrichment without filters and electricity

If the filter fails because there is no more electricity in the house, you can also have problems here if it lasts longer. The oxygen content in the water decreases and circulation no longer takes place. But what can you do here without electricity. Of course, the above options also apply here. Above all, an uninterrupted power supply is very interesting here. It would provide enough energy to keep the filter running. Much less power is required here compared to the heater. A battery system is therefore also recommended.

But you can also provide oxygen if you don't have electricity. The good old principle of the air pump should be mentioned here. It offers the possibility to bring oxygen into the pool. A compressed gas bottle is also suitable and much more practical.

Of course, you can also use oxygen tabs. These are also available in specialist shops and are not expensive. Maybe you should always stock up on some.

  • Inject oxygen manually
  • Oxygen from a compressed gas tank
  • Use oxygen tablets

A UPS system for the aquarium - independent of electricity

Of course, you can also play it safe and make yourself virtually independent of electricity. For that there are different possibilities. Be it with the help of a Solar plant on the roof and a corresponding energy storage device or with the help of a UPS system. Of course, both are not exactly cheap and also require some considerations in terms of performance requirements. Nevertheless, there are many aquarists who want one UPS system buy to be independent from electricity for a few hours. Everyone has to decide for themselves whether they want to spend so much money. Above all, this also depends on how the power grid is in his area. If you have problems very often then it can be worthwhile.
